Dear Esteemed IAA Client,

We join the rest of the world in commemorating World Antibiotic Awareness Week from the 13th to the 19th of November.

Antibiotics have transformed the practice of medicine, making once lethal infections readily treatable and making other medical advances, like cancer chemotherapy and organ transplants, possible.  The prompt initiation of antibiotics to treat infections has been proven to reduce morbidity and save lives, with a recent example being the rapid administration of antibiotics in the management of sepsis.

Influenza circulates throughout the year in Uganda but with two peak seasons; the first and major one being between September to November and a minor one from March to June.

SYMPTOMS: Influenza causes chills, muscle aches, cough, congestion, runny nose, headaches and fatigue and usually presents with more severe symptoms in the children.

The Uganda Cancer Institute (UCI) reports number of cancer patients increased by over 4,000 in 2016 and 1,500 actually succumbed to the cancer disease every year. The risk of getting cancer below years is on the increase from 18% in 2008. According to Uganda cancer institute report 2016, over 4,000 cases of cancer are diagnosed every year.

The uterine cervix is the lowest portion of a woman’s uterus (womb), connecting the uterus with the vagina.Cervical cancer occurs when the cells of the cervix grow abnormally and invade other tissues and organs of the body. When it is invasive, this cancer affects the deeper tissues of the cervix and may have spread to other parts of the body (metastasis), most notably the lungs, liver, bladder, vagina, and rectum.

Breast Cancer is the second frequest cause of death among Women. The occurrence age is 45 however half of women are diagnosed with cancer are below 40years.  1% of Men develop cancer too.

Complications of prostate cancer and its treatments include:

  • Cancer that spreads (metastasizes). Prostate cancer can spread to nearby organs, such as your bladder, or travel through your bloodstream or lymphatic system to your bones or other organs. Prostate cancer that spreads to the bones can cause pain and broken bones. Once prostate cancer has spread to other areas of the body, it may still respond to treatment and may be controlled, but it’s unlikely to be cured.

Prostate is the most common cancer among men in Uganda and around the world. Over 1500 men are diagnosed with prostate every year. Prostate cancer is cancer that occurs in the prostate — a small walnut-shaped gland in men that produces the seminal fluid that nourishes and transports sperm.

Breast cancer is the top cancer in women worldwide and is increasing particularly in developing countries where the majority of cases are diagnosed in late stages (WHO, 2017) which increases the number of deaths due to Breast cancer
